1. Yunnan Rock Forest exhibits a wide variety of Karst landforms. It is also known as Stone Forest.

3. Karst is a landscape which is characterized by limestone and similar rock that have been eroded by acidic groundwater.

4. This odd landscape is located on a high plateau about 100 km from Kunming – the capital of Yunnan Province.

5. At a glance, this strange geological formation resembles a petrified forest with thickets of grayish tree trunks jutting up from the soil.

6. Many of these rock formations that resemble petrified trees create the illusion of a forest made of stone.

7. These peculiar turrets and towers are composed of limestones that are comparable to gigantic mushrooms, pagodas and clumps of bamboos.

8. The sizes of these strange-looking rock formations ranged from a few feet to nearly 100 feet or 30 meters.

14. The forest is estimated to have been uplifted about one million years ago and the tall rocks look like they emanated from the ground like stalagmites.

15. After thousands and thousands of years, through the geological process called erosion – Yunnan Rock Forest came into existence.
